PRAYER HEARD AND ANSWERED
Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years. Isaiah 38:5
God’s statement that Hezekiah must prepare for death and Hezekiah’s prayer to God have important implications in our lives and relationship to God.
(1) ALL DECLARATIONS FROM GOD ARE NOT NECESSARILY IRREVOCABLE
The things which God declares about the future are not necessarily irrevocable. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. Jonah 3:9-10
When Christians are confronted with tragedy, they can rest assured that God cares about what happens to them. He is compassionate and sensitive to our experiences.
(2) OUR PRAYERS HAVE AN EFFECT ON GOD
Our prayers have an effect on God and His purposes, and the outworking of His sovereign plan for us. So what ever happens in our lives is determined by both God’s plan and our prayers. We must always maintain the scriptural conviction that prayer does change things. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. James 5:14-15
