THE EARNEST OF THE SPIRIT
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. 2 Cor 1:22
There are four aspects of the work of God in the believer that is manifest through the Holy Spirit.
(1) ESTABLISHES THE BELIEVER
The Holy Spirit establishes the believer and helps him/her persevere in his/her life of faith. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:5
(2) ANOINTS THE BELIEVER
The Holy Spirit anoints the believer in order to endue them with power to witness. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8 He endues them to perform the works of Christ. The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Isaiah 61:1 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38 The Holy Spirit endues them to know truth. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. 1 John 2:20
(3) OFFICIAL SEAL
The Holy Spirit is the official seal of God’s ownership marking the believer as His own property. He produces in the believer a Godly character within his personality. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. Gal 5:26 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Eph 1:13
(4) AN INDWELLING “EARNEST”
The Holy Spirit is an indwelling “earnest” i.e. A guarantee and a first installment to the believer that a greater life with Christ will come in the near future. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 2 Cor 5:5 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. Romans 8:23
